JACONA — In the first round of the Ben Lujan Invitational Tournament, the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys varsity basketball team used the bookend quarters quite nicely. The Hilltoppers outscored the Wingate Bears by 29 points in the first and fourth quarters, while cruising in the middle quarters to upend the Bears 78-48 and advance to tonight’s tournament semifinal.Thursday afternoon’s contest, held at Ben Lujan Gymnasium on the Pojoaque High School campus, was a wild, run-and-gun affair with the Bears barely stopping to take a breath the entire game. The Bears launched 57 shots, 12 from behind the 3-point circle, in Thursday’s game, but shot a mere 28.1 percent from the floor. When the Hilltoppers tried to keep up, they struggled. When they settled into their half-court offense, the Bears were no match.“We got out early, then we started to say ‘let’s play with them instead of having them play with us,’” Los Alamos head coach Alan Kirk said.
