The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys basketball team came up big when it mattered most Wednesday night, downing the Bernalillo Spartans 57-44 at Griffith Gymnasium.
The game was the District 2AAAA opener for both teams.
Los Alamos (5-14 overall), got 20 points from Thomas Russell, rejoining the lineup after a foot injury kept him out of a ballgame last week, and 12 more from Nick Baker to knock off the Spartans.
The Hilltoppers trailed by one point at the break, but used an 11-5 push in the third quarter to take control of the contest, then sank 15 of 18 chances at the free throw line in the fourth quarter to seal the win.
