The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys basketball team managed to give the defending Class AAAA champion Roswell Coyotes a good run for their money, but only for one quarter.
The Hilltoppers and Coyotes were deadlocked after one quarter in Wednesday’s second round of the Poe Corn Invitational, but the Coyotes put together a good second quarter push.
Los Alamos came out of the locker room after the half with little energy and Roswell took advantage, putting Wednesday night’s game out of reach.
Roswell, the top-ranked school in Class AAAA according to the most recent statewide coaches’ poll, prevailed Wednesday 68-41. Roswell outscored Los Alamos 20-8 in the second period and held Los Alamos to just seven points in the third.
The Coyotes (7-1) are scheduled to face the undefeated Belen Eagles (5-0) tonight in the Poe Corn championship game. Los Alamos will take on Goddard in today’s third-place game.
Alex Kirk led Los Alamos with 15 points Wednesday night. Kirk grabbed 9 rebounds, had 6 blocked shots and finished with 3 assists as well.
