Boys basketball: LA travels to Belen tonight

Despite the weather hassles, the Los Alamos-Belen boys basketball game is still on for this evening.Los Alamos will travel to Belen this evening to take on the Eagles. Tip-off for the varsity game is scheduled for 7 p.m.The Hilltoppers are 4-1 on the young season and are coming off a successful swing up to the Four Corners area. They knocked off Piedra Vista 70-58 Friday night, then bounced back Saturday afternoon to down Farmington 42-30.Hilltoppers Alex Kirk and Ben Allen combine for 44 points against Piedra Vista, and Kirk finished with 16 points to lead the Hilltoppers against Farmington. Nik Allen finished with 12.Because of the heavy snow over the last two days, the Los Alamos-Aztec girls basketball game, which was scheduled for Tuesday at Griffith Gymnasium, was postponed. Los Alamos’ athletic office was trying to reschedule the game, but it has not yet announced a date.Los Alamos head coach Alan Kirk said tonight’s game would be a good test for his team, as Belen was scrappy and quick.Belen has won two of its first three contests this season, knocking off Socorro and Los Alamos’ District 2AAAA rival Taos. It lost its most recent outing, an 83-60 decision against Albuquerque High Friday.
