The Los Alamos Hilltopper boys basketball team couldn’t slow down the Moriarty Pintos in the second half Tuesday, allowing the Pintos to score a come-from-behind victory.
Moriarty managed to push the ball into the lane and pick up fouls in the second half Tuesday as it knocked off Los Alamos 48-41 in Moriarty.
The loss dropped the Hilltoppers to 0-3 on the young season. More importantly, the loss was the third of the season by the Hilltoppers to a Class AAAA opponent.
Los Alamos led 18-11 after a low-scoring first half, but Moriarty picked up its aggressiveness on offense in the second half to get back into the game. The teams traded leads throughout most of the second half — neither team had much more than a 3-point edge for the bulk of the half — before the Pintos (1-4) were able to pull away late.
For the Hilltoppers, things don’t get any easier. Tonight, they will host a very good Class AAA team, St. Michael’s, then follow up that game with a contest against Class AAAA Belen, which topped Moriarty 41-37 Saturday in the Bernalillo Invitational.
Tonight’s game at Griffith Gymnasium starts at 7 p.m. The game will also be broadcast on KRSN AM 1490 with Gene Mortensen on the call.
