The Capital Jaguars, the No. 2 seed in the District 2AAAA boys basketball tournament, upset the top-seeded Española Valley Sundevils 44-43 in overtime Friday.

The win gives the Jaguars the 2AAAA championship. The Sundevils, who went 7-1 in 2AAAA play, were the regular season champs.

After going more than three calendar years without losing a district game, the Sundevils have now lost two straight district contests, both of them at home. They were defeated by the Bernalillo Spartans in the regular season finale.

The loss could well cost Española Valley a chance at a top seed in the upcoming Class 4A state tournament — it has an automatic entry by virtue of its regular season title — while Capital's stock could rise significantly with Friday's upset win.

The victory was the first 2AAAA title for Capital since 2005-06.
