Cub Scout Pack 229 held its Blue and Gold Banquet Monday at the Barranca Elementary School gym. This particular banquet stood out from others because Boy Scouts of America is celebrating 100 years of scouting this year.
Honored guests included Paul Rhein, Northern New Mexico District director, Jay Elson, Associate Order of the Arrow adviser, and Dane Spearing, Troop 22 scoutmaster.
All Pack 229 Scouts advanced in rank. Gold Webelos, Joshua Barraza, Zachary Carson, Facundo Jaime, Lukas Peterson and Daniel Sarrao, received their Order of the Arrow badge. They participated in the Arrow of Light Ceremony, moving from Cub Scouts to Boy Scouts.
All five boys decided to join Boy Scout Troop 22. Gold Webelos Den Leader John Sarrao was recognized for serving as den leader for four years.
The theme of this year’s banquet was “Blast off with Scouting.” Den 2, which is for third-graders, won an award for “best table decorations.” The NJROTC performed the opening flag ceremony and Den 2 performed the closing ceremony.
Each den performed a skit. Parents Lisa and Juan Barraza created a slide- show honoring the Gold Webelos.
The Blue and Gold planning committee included Louise Gentile, Susan Mendal, Valerie Merl and Margie Sarrao.
