Fundraiser celebrates its 17th year

By Special to the Monitor

This year will mark the 17th Annual Empty Bowls Project.  Each year the Self Help, Inc. fundraiser has grown in popularity. The goal is to offer 800 hand painted bowls.  So far, 500 have been completed. Another objective is to have 200 painted during the community bowl painting party, which will be held from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday at the Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Painters of all ages are invited to participate.

In addition to decorating bowls for the March 13 fundraiser, refreshments will be served. There is no charge to participate.

The 17th Annual Empty Bowls Project will be held at the Betty Ehart Senior Center. For a donation of $10, participants can choose a hand painted bowl, enjoy a delicious soup and bread lunch with live entertainment. The money raised is for Self Help, Inc.

Self Help, Inc. is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting those in need in northern New Mexico. Since 1969, Self Help, Inc. has provided consultation and advocacy, emergency financial assistance and seed money grants to residents of Los Alamos, northern Santa Fe, Rio Arriba and Taos counties.  Each year, through grants and private and public contributions, the organization is able to support those who need help most, during emergencies or in the quest to become economically self-sufficient.

Volunteers are needed to work from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. during the event and donations of bread, soup and cookies are needed, too. For more information, call Gillian at 663-1490.
