ESPANOLA, N.M. (AP) — New Mexico State Police say they began a homicide investigation after finding evidence with the burned bodies of two people found in a car west of Espanola.
Investigators have not released details.
The bodies were found early Monday morning after a call about a vehicle fire at a rest area off U.S. 285 between Espanola and Ojo Caliente.
State police said earlier this week they believe they know the identities of the two people.
But state police spokesman Lt. Eric Garcia says investigators are not releasing names until the families can be notified and the identities can be confirmed.
He says the bodies are believed to be those of two Espanola-area residents.
The bodies were turned over to the state Office of the Medical Investigator.
