A 58-year-old Los Alamos man riding his bicycle along West Jemez Road between the Emergency Operations Center and Fire Station 5 was hit from behind by an older model Chrysler Mini Van Monday.

The accident occurred shortly after 2 p.m.

The bicyclist sustained severe injuries and was transported to Los Alamos Medical Center where he was immediately air lifted out.

He remains in the Intensive Care Unit of a hospital in Albuquerque.

The man driving the Mini Van was uninjured, according to police.

Charges are pending the outcome of an investigation currently underway to determine how he happened to hit the bicyclist from behind.

"Alcohol does not appear to be a factor," said Lt. Chuck Ney this morning.
