A Christmas in New Mexico dinner will be held at 6:30 p.m. at the Santa Fe Lodge, 750 N. St. Francis Dr. It is sponsored by the Christian Women’s Club and the After 5 Club. The Mariachi Buenaventura (Santa Fe’s all-female Mariachis) will entertain. Speaker Dean Graves of Albuquerque will present “The Blessings of Prison Life.” Cost is $20 inclusive. Dance Arts Los Alamos’ production of “Nuts, Crackers and Sweets” is a modern twist on the traditional “Nutcracker” and features many genres of dance including modern, tap, jazz as well as ballet. It will be at 6:30 p.m. at the Duane Smith Auditorium. A lively hip hop battle scene staged by faculty member Manny Romero will be a highlight of the show. Tickets are $5 at the door.
The Christian Church is hosting a Christmas movie premier at 7 p.m. Dec. 15 and at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. Dec. 19 at the Christian Church, 92 East Road. “A Christmas Snow” will challenge attendees with the message of forgiveness and redemption. It will bring home the real meaning of Christmas. Tickets are $5.
A discussion of the U.S.-Russia New START nuclear weapons treaty will be presented at an open meeting of the Los Alamos Committee on Arms Control and International Security at 7:30 p.m. in the Lounge at the United Church. The meeting, which will be moderated by retired LANL weapons scientist Thurman Talley, will cover the treaty’s verification provisions and review the reasons to support ratification by the Senate.
Come hear the old standards and a few new arrangements played on tubas, euphoiums and alto horns during the free Christmas Concert at 7:15 p.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church. Bring in the New Year with the sounds of fireworks at the Los Alamos Fire and Ice New Year’s Eve Celebration, from 6 p.m.-1 a.m. at the Valles Caldera National Preserve. Fees include a moonlit permit to cross-country ski and snowshoe in the Preserve. Permit fees are $25 for adults, $20 seniors, $15 for ages 6 to 15 years, and kids 5 and younger are free.
