The Los Alamos High School Band invites the public to their annual Winter Concert at 7 p.m. at the Duane Smith Auditorium. Also performing this evening will be the Los Alamos Middle School band.
Nate Downey will speak on permaculture and his new book “Harvest the Rain,” as part of the Winter Wednesdays Talk, at 7 p.m. at the Pajarito Environmental Education Center, 3540 Orange St.
The Los Alamos Republican Women will have their annual holiday luncheon at noon at the Best Western Hilltop House. NMFRW president Elaine Miller will install the newly elected 2011-2012 officers. Members are requested to bring their gifts and donations for the adopted family to the luncheon.
The Christmas party for the Los Alamos Master Gardeners will be at 6 p.m. at the home of Denise George, 411 Cheryl, White Rock. It will be a potluck event, so members should bring a dish to share.

Parents are welcome to drop off kids ages 5-12 from 2-4 p.m. (note new time) to make holiday gifts from recycled or natural materials and even decorate their own gift wrappings. A Christmas in New Mexico dinner will be held at6:30 p.m. at the Santa Fe Lodge, 750 N. St. Francis Dr. It is sponsored by the Christian Women’s Club and the After 5 Club. The Mariachi Buenaventura (Santa Fe’s all-female Mariachis) will entertain. Speaker Dean Graves of Albuquerque will present “The Blessings of Prison Life.” Cost is $20 inclusive. Dance Arts Los Alamos’ production of Nuts, Crackers, and Sweets is a modern twist on the traditional Nutcracker and features many genres of dance including modern, tap, jazz as well as ballet. It will be at 6:30 p.m. at the Duane Smith Auditorium. A lively hip hop battle scene staged by faculty member Manny Romero will be a highlight of the show. Tickets are $5 at the door.
The Christian Church is hosting a Christmas movie premier at 7 pm. Dec. 15 and at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. Dec. 19 at the Christian Church, 92 East Road. “A Christmas Snow” will challenge attendees with the message of forgiveness and redemption. It will bring home the real meaning of Christmas. Tickets are $5.

Bring in the New Year with the sounds of fireworks at the Los Alamos Fire and Ice New Year’s Eve Celebration, from 6 p.m.-1 a.m. at the Valles Caldera National Preserve. Fees include a moonlit permit to cross-country ski and snowshoe in the Preserve. Permit fees are $25 for adults, $20 seniors, $15 for ages 6 to 15 years, and kids 5 and younger are free.
