Summer Family Evenings at PEEC presents Owls. See live owls from the Raptor Center, listen to recorded owl calls and go for a short hike to listen for owls in the wild. 6:30 p.m. Free to PEEC members, $5 per family for non-members. Dances of India, a free performance presented by the Los Alamos Family Y Kathak and Bhratnatyam classes, will be from 7-8 p.m. at the White Rock Town Hall. The performance is part of the Los Alamos Public Library’s Family Fun Nights.

Ponderosa Montessori is hosting a father’s day luncheon for all fathers who are able to attend and spend the afternoon playing with their children. All fathers are invited and lunch will be served at noon. If fathers are unable to attend the luncheon, feel free to send grandpa or anyone who would like to join the event.
The Senior Appreciation wrap-up meeting will be at 1 p.m. at the aquatic center.
There will be a poetry gathering at 6:30 p.m. in the upstairs rotunda of Mesa Public Library.

The Los Alamos Opera Guild, a member of The Guilds of The Santa Fe Opera, Inc., announces a special presentation, “Preview of the Santa Fe Opera 2012,” by local opera singer Alicia Solomon. At 7 p.m. at the Mesa Public Library, she will explain highlights of the five operas being performed by the Santa Fe Opera. The Alzheimer’s Association, New Mexico Chapter will present a free educational course designed specifically for caregivers of people with Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias, from 10 a.m.-noon at Aspen Ridge Lodge, 1010 Sombrilla Ct. This seven-week “Savvy Caregiver” training will teach caregivers practical techniques for interacting with loved ones with Alzheimer’s, for long-term planning and for coping with associated stresses. The course also explains the signs, behaviors and pathology of Alzheimer’s disease. While the class is free, enrollment is limited to 15. Jin Park’s senior recital, with special guest appearances by Dalton Smith, Judy Lee, Victoria Wang and Nathan Salazar will be at 6:30 p.m. at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 3700 Canyon Road. The recital will feature works by Samuel Barber, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Frederic Chopin, Gian Carlo Menotti, Maria Theresa Von Paradis, Dmitir Shostakovich and Alexander Borodin, along with a special surprise. The suggested donation is two cans of non-perishable food, which will be benefit LA Cares.
The libraries are doing hands-on clinics to help patrons learn how to use the new service for downloadable audio books and eBooks. Patrons should bring their own devices on which they plan to use the service with them for the most effective session. The Overdrive clinics will be from 6:30-8:30 p.m. June 15 and 22 at Mesa Public Library.
The Mesa Public Library is hosting a poetry reading with Mike Katko and David Schiferl at 7 p.m. in the upstairs rotunda.

The Pajarito Astronomers will hold a county-sponsored Dark Night at 8:30 p.m. at Spirio Soccer Field in Overlook Park. Weather permitting, the public is invited to come out, wander among the telescopes and star gaze. The planets Mercury, Mars and Saturn will be visible as will Saturn’s rings and moons. There will be a tour of the spring and summer constellations and there will be telescope views of double stars, star clusters, nebulae and galaxies. The public is invited and encouraged to attend. The Los Alamos Creative District is now accepting applications for exhibitors/vendors from throughout the area to display and sell their work at the White Rock Art and Artisans Market.
