The League of Women Voters’ monthly Lunch with a Leader will be at 11:45 a.m. at Pajarito Environmental Education Center. The featured speaker will be Carol Clark. Ruby K’s will deliver lunch. Each sandwich or salad comes with chips and a cookie for $12. When RSVPing to Karyl Ann Armbruster, she will let you know the choices available to order. If you do not order by 2 p.m. May 9, you will not be able to get lunch, though you are still welcome to attend. You do not have to be a League member to attend Lunch with a Leader. The Los Alamos Genealogical Association will hold its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. in Room 3 at the Mesa Public Library. The program will be a presentation by Ron and Corine Christman titled, “You Mean There Were Germans Who Came From Russia?” The public is invited. The Los Alamos County Recreation Division is hosting the Queen’s Court competition to determine the Los Alamos County Fair and Rodeo queen, princess and sweetheart. Categories include: queen contestants (ages 17-25); princess contestants (ages 14-16); and sweetheart contestants (ages 10-13). Entries must be submitted by May 7. Wildflower walk with PEEC. Join Chick Keller, curator of PEEC’s Jemez Mountains Herbarium for an easy walk to learn the names of local wildflowers. The Los Alamos Master Gardeners are having a potluck in celebration with the new Master Gardner graduates at 6 p.m. at the White Rock Tow Hall.

Big MAC welcomes the new seventh graders to Los Alamos Middle School with a sixth and seventh-grade dance from 7-9 p.m. at Pueblo Gym. Admission is $3. Those interested in volunteering to chaperone should call 662-9412. Big MAC is sponsored by the Youth Activity Center as a program of the Los Alamos Family Council.
The spring food drive in Los Alamos and White Rock will be conducted by the Los Alamos Letter Carriers and he Boy Scouts of America to support LA Cares and the St. Martin de Porres Soup Kitchen in Española. Boy Scouts will help letter carriers collect non-perishable food and household supplies placed near mailboxes on Saturday morning. Cub Scouts will accept food donations at Smith’s Food and Drug Centers on May 12 only. Scouts will assist LA Cares volunteers to sort the food at the Knights of Columbus Hall.
The Jerry Bower Memorial Run will take place at 9 a.m. at the Betty Ehart Senior Center. Registration is $25 and runners can register the day of the race. For more information, contact Pauline Schneider at 662-8920.
Natural Wonders of Los Alamos: Cave of the Winds. Janie O’Rourke leads this easy hike to the Cave of the Winds, a shallow slot cave at the edge of Los Alamos Canyon. Free, but space is limited, so register in advance at PajaritoEEC.org, call 662-0460 or email Programs@PajaritoEEC.org.
The Los Alamos High School ‘Topper Advisory Council is hosting a Freshman Parent Orientation for parents of incoming freshman to LAHS next fall. This event will be from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the LAHS Speech Theater. Meet LAHS Principal Sandy Warnock and learn about Freshman Academy, Academic Time, Saturday School and how to be involved as a parent at LAHS.
