Celebrate National Poetry Month with a poetry gathering at 6:30 p.m. in the upstairs rotunda of Mesa Public Library.
The Los Alamos Federated Republican Women will hold a meeting at 7 p.m. at the home of Janet Hall, 129 S. Monte Rey Dr. Harry Burgess, the new county administrator is the guest speaker. It will be an opportunity to meet him and extend a welcome. Members are reminded to bring non-perishable food items and toiletries for charity donations. The Los Alamos Genealogical Association will hold its monthly meeting at 7 p.m. in Room 3 at the Mesa Public Library. There will be a group discussion on the early migratory paths in the United States. The public is invited.
First Friday Forts at Pajarito Environmental Education Center (moved to the second Friday because of spring break). Join other kids at PEEC to build forts and play in them together. Every first Friday of the month from after school until dusk. Free, but parents must stay with their kids. “Petra and the Jay,” a sci-fi musical play, tells the story of Petra and her animal and alien friends. Show times are 7 p.m. Friday and 2 p.m. Saturday. The play stars Maura Taylor as Petra; written and composed by Cary Neeper and Bonnie Kellogg; directed by Alicia Solomon. Tickets are $15 for general admission; $10 for seniors and students; and children 12 and younger are admitted free. Tickets are available online at PajaritoEEC.org, at CB Fox, or at the door.
A Gordon’s Los Alamos Summer Concert Series Fundraiser will be from 7:30-10:30 p.m. at the Best Western Hilltop House Hotel. Eddie and the Nomads and D.K. and the Affordables will provide entertainment. Tickets are $25 and include the evening’s appetizers by Chef Diego Torres. Those who wish to donate an item or service to auctioned off can drop off the donation at the Best Western Hilltop House Hotel, or call Denise Smith at 505-412-3425 to arrange pick-up. Registration for the 2012 Bear Camp Summer program will open at 7 a.m. at the aquatic center. Doors will open at midnight for customer convenience. Bear Camp is for children entering kindergarten through sixth grade. Space is limited to 75 children each week. Pick up applications at the aquatic center front desk, or online at losalamosnm.us/rec. The League of Women Voters will hold its annual meeting at Bethlehem Evangelical Lutheran Church, 2390 North Road. The members meeting will be at 9:30 a.m., with a public potluck lunch and talk by Steve Laurent at 11:45 a.m. Laurent will talk about “Anatomy of a Real Estate/Construction Deal.” The public is invited to join for the discussion. The First Born Program will host a parenting skills class from 10 a.m.-noon in the cafeteria at Los Alamos Medical Center. There is no charge for the course and it is intended for soon-to-be parents. They will cover topics like bathing, swaddling and soothing, umbilical cord care and preparing for the post-partum transition period. There will also be a panel of new parents present to answer questions and provide suggestions and advice. Terra Hite, RN will facilitate the course.
Breastfeeding 101, led by board certified lactation consultants affiliated with La Leche League of Los Alamos, will discuss latch and positioning, baby cueing, what to expect the first few days of breastfeeding and dad’s role in the breastfeeding relationship, from 1-4 p.m. at Family Strengths Network, 1990 Diamond Dr. The class is $30 and includes a copy of “The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding.” La Leche League is a separate nonprofit organization, not affiliated with Family Strengths Network or its programs. The Los Alamos Garden club meeting and installation potluck will begin with socializing at 9:30 a.m. at the Crossroads Bible Church. The next meeting of the Los Alamos Geological Society will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Christian Church, 92 East Road. The speaker will be announced at the meeting. The April 2012 field trip will be to the Jones Camp area near Socorro, April 21. We will meet at 9 a.m. in the Smith’s parking lot in Socorro. Plan on bringing rock breaking equipment, storage items to protect small specimens, a hand lens, sunscreen, water, snacks, lunch, eye protection, camera and whatever you need for a day in the field.
