The American Legion Riders of Los Alamos is having a fund-raising ride in memory of a dear friend, Carol, who passed away unexpectedly from heart failure. The ride departs at 11 a.m., at the American Legion Hall (in front of the Fabulous 50’s restaurant). Proceeds from the $20 entry fee per person go to the American Heart Association; all are welcome. The Los Alamos Concert Association presents Amsterdam’s Calefax Reed Quintet at 4 p.m. in the Smith Auditorium. Oboe, clarinet, sax, bass clarinet and bassoon playing music with a French twist: Gershwin’s “An American in Paris,” Kurt Weill’s “Three Penny Opera” and works by Debussy, Ravel and Rameau. The Posse Shack Breakfast will benefit Los Alamos Friends of the Shelter, a local nonprofit organization. It’s more than a breakfast — bid on gift baskets; register early for the 2013 Dog Jog; enter a raffle for a $400 gift certificate for a pet photograph from Don Taylor; Josephine Boyer will do glitter tattoos (on face and hands); meet some shelter dogs at a mobile adoption. Bring your family and friends and enjoy the event. They might even have a Doggie Kissing Booth again this year. The Posse Shack is at 650 North Mesa Road, near the stables. The cost is $7 for adults and
$4 for children younger than 10-years-old.
P.E.O. Chapter AK will meet at the home of Betty Robertson with Kathy Fraser serving as co-hostess. Joann Brown is in charge of the program, which will begin at 7:30 p.m. with refreshments to follow before the start of the meeting.
The Los Alamos Volunteer Examiner Group will give exams for amateur radio licenses at 6:30 p.m. in the Club Meeting Room at 4017 Arkansas (the Old Fire Barn). Those testing for a new license will need a picture ID or two other forms of ID with name and address on them (utility bill, credit card bill or other) and a test fee of $15, either in cash or a check made out to “ARRL VEC.” Those seeking a license upgrade will need the picture ID or two other forms of ID plus the original license and a copy of the license or a valid CSCE (Certificate of Successful Completion of Exam) and a copy of the CSCE, plus the exam fee of $15. The Republican Party of Los Alamos will elect the 2013-2015 County Central Committee and its officers at the Jeannette O. Wallace Hall, room 505, at UNM-LA, 400 University Drive. The United Thrift Shop is planning on being open from 9 a.m.-noon. Previously, it was open Wednesdays only. The plan is to open the Thrift Shop the first Saturday morning (only) of each month.
