Poetry Gatherings with Jane Lin will be at 6:30 p.m. in the upstairs rotunda of Mesa Public Library.

The Los Alamos Genealogical Association will meet at 7 p.m. in room 3 at the Mesa Public Library. The speaker will be Irma Holtkamp. She will speak on “Using Ancestry and Ancestry DNA to Research Your Family History.” The public is invited.

The Los Alamos Federated Republican Women will hold their monthly meeting at 7 p.m. at UNM-LA, Building 2, Room 203. The speaker will be Frances Fernandes, president of SFFRW. The AARP local chapter  will host coffee at 9:30 a.m. in the classroom at the Betty Ehart Senior Center. A welcome to new retirees  and ideas for future programs will be part of this informal  gathering. For more information, call 662-8920.

The local Battle of the Books begins at 6 p.m. Register in the Mesa Public Library lobby.

It is Fish Fry time again at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish Hall from 5-7 p.m. The dinners are sponsored by the Knights of Columbus and proceed will benefit Nuestros Pequeños Orphanage in Honduras and other charities. Adult plates are $10 and have two pieces of cod, with coleslaw and rice or French fries, plus a drink and dessert. Children may have one piece of fish or a grilled cheese sandwich with all the rest for $7 a plate.
LALT presents “Van Choc Straw” at 7:30 p.m. Tickets, $12 general admission and $10 for students, are available in advance at CB Fox or at the door.
There are several spaces remaining in the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish Hunter Education class scheduled for Los Alamos March 16-17. All course registration is conducted online at wildlife.state.nm.us and it is recommended to enroll as early as possible as courses fill quickly.

The 2013 Empty Bowls Event will be from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. at the Betty Ehart Senior Center. For a minimum donation of $15, participants will pick a hand-painted bowl and enjoy a soup lunch donated by a local restaurants, including bread, drink and desert. There will also be a silent auction. The Craig Martin Experience and other local musicians will provide live music.
Proceeds benefit Self Help Inc., a local nonprofit, committed to helping our neighbors in Northern New Mexico with emergency funds for housing, utilities, food, disaster recovery and other challenges.

St. Dimitri Orthodox Church will host its Annual Blini Breakfast. Russian blini, a type of thin pancake, will be served in traditional style with smoked salmon, herring, butter, and sour cream. Vegetable caviar, eggs, cheese. At-the-door cost is $12.50; $6 for children 6-12-years-old. There is no charge for children younger than six.
