Wax poetic on Valentine’s Day, at the Poetry Gathering at 6:30 p.m. in the upstairs rotunda of Mesa Public Library.
The Los Alamos Genealogical Association will meet at 7 p.m. in room three in Mesa Public Library. Joanie Langholf from Albuquerque will present a program on using FamilySesarch.org to research your family history. The public is invited.
The premiere of Los Alamos resident Samantha Filer’s films, “The Sword of Arundel,” will be at 6:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church, 715 Diamond Dr. The hour-long film is set in the medieval fantasy kingdom of Arundel and is a story of hope, determination and survival. Filer, now 16, began her project at 13, with a dream a stack of filming books and a five-minute short called “Simple Complications.” The show is free.
Cathy Faber’s Swingin’ Country Band will play from 7-11 p.m. at the Sheriff’s Posse Lodge. Steve Wallin’s Texas barbecue hot brisket sandwiches and Cary’s chili will be sold from 6 p.m. until it’s gone. Non-alcoholic cash bar for all mixers and set-ups. BYOB. Beau Gerard, aka the Bike Doc, will host another afternoon of his original solo piano compositions at 3 p.m. He had a successful audition for the show, “America’s Got Talent,” and will share his music with all that are there. The public is invited, RSVP to 310-0536.
There will be a guided hike of Cerro la Jara, on the Valles Caldera Preserve at 10 a.m. The two-mile snowshoe hike runs from 10 a.m.-noon. Meet at the Valle Grande staging area for registration, snowshoe rentals and hot refreshments. The cost is $20 for Los Amigos members and $25 for non-members. The Los Alamos County Forum on the Sustainability Plan and Energy and Water Conservation Plan will be from noon to 1:30 p.m. in the upstairs meeting rooms of Mesa Public Library. Another forum will be at 5:30 and 7 p.m. Feb. 28 at the White Rock Town Hall.
The Hilltalkers Showcase Night: An Evening of Entertainment, will be at 7 p.m. at the First Baptist Church, 2200 Diamond Dr. The cost is $7 for adults and $5 for children younger than five. Desserts and beverages will be served.
The Rotary Club of Los Alamos invites the community to its Fourth Annual Crab Fest and all-you-can-eat crab and prawn family-style dinner at the Knights of Columbus Hall. The cash bar opens at 5:30 p.m., dinner will be served at 7 p.m. there will be music as well as silent and live auctions. Tickets are $5 each, reserved tables of 10 are $450. Tickets may be purchased at the Blue Window, CB Fox and the Chamber of Commerce. Proceeds benefit local scholarships and the purchase of an AED for Fuller Lodge. The Los Alamos Community Health Council is sponsoring the Leadership Connection Town Hall, an event from 5:30-7 p.m. at Fuller Lodge. The goal of the town hall is to report on key Los Alamos County health issues, trends and recommendations. Community leaders will give short presentations followed by questions and discussion.
