Mesa Public Library’s Authors Speak Series kicks off a new group of authors in the monthly series, at 7 p.m. with Santa Fe’s Poet Laureate Jon David. Author of six books of poetry, Davis teaches poetry writing at IAIA in Santa Fe.
Reservations are due to join a group of the Los Alamos Federated Republican Women will visit the Round House, attend the Legislature and the Governor’s Tea on Feb. 1. They invite any Republican women that would like to join them to contact Norma Tech for details, 662-7424. There is a small fee to attend the Governor’s Tea as well as reservations, due by Jan. 25. Fuller Lodge Art Center’s newest exhibit, “Show Some Class,” will open with a reception from 1-3 p.m. at the art center.

The Los Alamos Geological Society will host a banquet and talk featuring Dr. Paul Bauer of the New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources. The banquet begins at 5:30 p.m., with the talk starting at 7 p.m., at the Christian Church. The Los Alamos Cooperative Market will cater the meal. The price is $25. Updated in summer 2012, the now nine-week Financial Peace University course provides families and individuals with tools to gain control of their finances and set themselves up for long-term financial success. The course meets once a week where Dave Ramsey teaches a different lesson on DVD, followed by a small group discussion. Lessons include budgeting, relationships and money, getting out of debt, saving for emergencies and investing. FPU will be held at 4 p.m. at the White Rock Baptist Church located, 80 N.M. 4. The Los Alamos Choral Society and the Los Alamos Symphony Orchestra will present “Messiah” by George Frederick Handel, from 3-6 p.m. at the Duane Smith Auditorium. Dr. Mary Badarak will direct the performance. Tickets are $15 for adults and are available at CB Fox and at the door. Students’ admission is free.

The P.E.O. Chapter AK will meet at 7 p.m. at the home of Marilyn Doolen. Joan Brown will serve as co-hostess and Ruth Lier is in charge of the program.

United Blood Services will host a blood drive from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. at Los Alamos High School’s speech theater.

A workshop to educate baby boomers on Social Security, titled “Savvy Social Security Planning: What Baby Boomers Need to Know to Maximize Retirement Income,” will be at noon at the Mesa Public Library. In Search of Dominguez and Escalante. Come to PEEC to hear photographers/authors Siegfried Halus and Greg MacGregor speak about their book, which follows the 1776 expedition of Francisco Atanasio Dominguez and Silvestre Velez de Escalante. 7 p.m. Free, with books available for purchase. Feb. 3
The Los Alamos Sheriff’s Posse Lodge will hold a pancake breakfast from 7-11 a.m. at the Posse Lodge, 650 North Mesa Road. The menu includes plain, blueberry, banana, chocolate chip, special variety of the month pancakes and sausage, bacon, eggs, juice and coffee. The cost is $7 for adults and $4 for children ages 10 and younger.
Feb. 4
The Summit Garden Club will meet, with guest Kimberly Tanner speaking on the topic of “Starting plants from seed, in a very, very small space.” Visitors welcome. For more information, call Nancy Nunnelly at 62-4950.

The Los Alamos Table Tennis Club meets from 7:30-10 p.m. Tuesdays; and from 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Saturdays, at the Betty Ehart Senior Center, lower level. On Tuesday, there is a fee of $2 per player. Newly formed Los Alamos MS Self-Help Group meets at 6:30 p.m. the fourth Tuesday of each month at the Mesa Public Library, Upper Level Meeting Room 1.


Building Kindness, a Habitat for Humanity affiliate, wants volunteers to help in the restoration of family homes. No skills necessary. You will be taught in the safe use of power tools and equipment while improving the living conditions of others less fortunate.  Skilled volunteers needed too.
