Basketball: Toppers girls pick up district victory

The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team got rolling when it needed to Monday night to knock off the Bernalillo Spartans.
The Hilltoppers outscored the Spartans 18-5 in the second quarter and 19-6 in the fourth to pick up a 59-38 win at home. The victory gets the Hilltoppers started on the right foot for their second go-round in District 2AAAA play.
Monday’s game at Griffith Gymnasium was a makeup contest for Los Alamos (10-11 overall, 4-1 in 2AAAA). Los Alamos and Bernalillo were scheduled to meet Friday night but the game was postponed due to inclement weather and Bernalillo’s district-wide shut down.
Because of the shutdown, which affected most schools in the state, neither team was able to practice much last week. Los Alamos head coach Tarah Logan said the lack of practice showed in the first quarter.
“We had to take the time off during the weekend, and some of the new stuff we were doing we weren’t as aggressive with it as we needed to be,” she said. “It slowed us down a little bit. We got sloppy with our defense.”
The Hilltoppers had to juggle their starting five around Monday due to some lingering illness and Logan said that might have interrupted the team’s flow early, as well.
In the second quarter, however, Los Alamos got things put back together. Sparked by forward Erin Kirk, who has come up big several times for Los Alamos during the district season, the Hilltoppers put things together on both ends of the floor.
Kirk, who finished with 10 points, one of three Hilltoppers in double-figures Monday, hit a pair of 3-pointers in the second quarter, as well as another outside shot with her toe on the 3-point line.
Also Monday, Tina Radosevich and Hayley Each both finished with 15 points.
Radosevich, who had one of her best games of the season, posted a double-double for Los Alamos, grabbing 14 rebounds to go along with her big scoring night. In addition, Logan said Radosevich did a good job guiding the team’s offense from the point.
“Tina’s getting back in the swing again,” Logan said. “She’s been very consistent running the ballgame for us.”
As it has done for much of the 2AAAA season, Los Alamos was again able to get virtually all of its personnel involved in the offense. All but one of the Hilltoppers got into the scoring column Monday.
The Hilltoppers, however, still have a lot of basketball to play this week. They will travel to Santa Fe Wednesday night to face the Demons (2-2 in 2AAAA), who could move to within a half-game of the Hilltoppers for second place in the district race with a win.
Saturday, the Hilltoppers will host 2AAAA leader Española Valley with a chance — if they get by Santa Fe whom they beat 47-32 Jan. 21 — to force a tie atop the district. Española Valley (3-0 in 2AAAA) won the first meeting with Los Alamos, 64-33.
