The Los Alamos Hilltopper girls basketball team got rolling when it needed to Monday night to knock off the Bernalillo Spartans.
The Hilltoppers outscored the Spartans 18-5 in the second quarter and 19-6 in the fourth to pick up a 59-38 win at home. The victory gets the Hilltoppers started on the right foot for their second go-round in District 2AAAA play.
Monday’s game at Griffith Gymnasium was a makeup contest for Los Alamos (10-11 overall, 4-1 in 2AAAA). Los Alamos and Bernalillo were scheduled to meet Friday night but the game was postponed due to inclement weather and Bernalillo’s district-wide shut down.
Because of the shutdown, which affected most schools in the state, neither team was able to practice much last week. Los Alamos head coach Tarah Logan said the lack of practice showed in the first quarter.
“We had to take the time off during the weekend, and some of the new stuff we were doing we weren’t as aggressive with it as we needed to be,” she said. “It slowed us down a little bit. We got sloppy with our defense.”
The Hilltoppers had to juggle their starting five around Monday due to some lingering illness and Logan said that might have interrupted the team’s flow early, as well.
