Broncos advance to 4A title game again
The Kirtland Central Broncos will play for their 19th state championship tonight when they take on the Roswell Coyotes in the Class 4A title game at The Pit.
The Broncos, the winningest team in the history of New Mexico, earned a solid victory over the top-seeded Grants Pirates Thursday night. The Broncos countered an 11-0 Grants run early in the first quarter with a 26-4 run extending for more than eight minutes to take control of the ballgame.
Kirtland Central would never trail after the first quarter as it cruised to a 53-42 victory.
Since 1979, the Broncos have only failed to reach the state championship game four times. They last won the 4A championship in 2010 and, for them have been on something of a state championship drought, as they’ve won only that title since 2005.
Roswell, meanwhile, downed Piedra Vista in the other championship game. The second-seeded Coyotes dropped the third-seeded Panthers 51-42.
Roswell (23-7) and Kirtland Central (28-4) did not play each other during the regular season. Roswell last advanced to the 4A title game in 2009, when it fell to St. Pius X.
Gallup, Santa Teresa meet for boys 4A crown
It’s an unlikely matchup for the 2011-12 state Class 4A boys basketball championship.
The fifth-seeded Gallup Bengals will take on the seventh-seeded Santa Teresa Desert Warriors Saturday afternoon in The Pit.
A day after all of the top-four seeded teams in 4A were upset, Gallup topped ninth-seeded Kirtland Central 53-41 in one of the tournament’s semifinals and Santa Teresa ended the Cinderella run of 11th-seeded Atrisco Heritage in the other semifinal by a count of 46-32.
Neither team has ever won a state title and, between the two teams, only Gallup has ever made a title game appearance, that coming in 1938.
In Class 5A, it’s an all Albuquerque final. Eldorado will meet La Cueva in Saturday night’s championship game.
Eldorado defeated Clovis, coached by former Los Alamos head coach Matt King, in Thursday’s semifinal, 79-62.
