Broncos advance to 4A title game again
The Kirtland Central Broncos will play for their 19th state championship tonight when they take on the Roswell Coyotes in the Class 4A title game at The Pit.
The Broncos, the winningest team in the history of New Mexico, earned a solid victory over the top-seeded Grants Pirates Thursday night. The Broncos countered an 11-0 Grants run early in the first quarter with a 26-4 run extending for more than eight minutes to take control of the ballgame.
Kirtland Central would never trail after the first quarter as it cruised to a 53-42 victory.
Since 1979, the Broncos have only failed to reach the state championship game four times. They last won the 4A championship in 2010 and, for them have been on something of a state championship drought, as they’ve won only that title since 2005.
Roswell, meanwhile, downed Piedra Vista in the other championship game. The second-seeded Coyotes dropped the third-seeded Panthers 51-42.
Roswell (23-7) and Kirtland Central (28-4) did not play each other during the regular season. Roswell last advanced to the 4A title game in 2009, when it fell to St. Pius X.
