Girls Class 4A: Grants’ offense comes up big in win over Artesia

All of the top four seeds in the Class 4A girls basketball state tournament made it through to Thursday’s semifinal round.
Top-seeded Grants dropped in a whopping 81 points as it knocked off eighth-seeded Artesia Tuesday afternoon at The Pit. Grants, which defeated Los Alamos in last weekend’s opening round, has a tall order in Thursday’s semifinal, however, when it takes on 18-time state champ Kirtland Central.
The Grants-Kirtland Central contest is set for 1:15 p.m. in The Pit. The other semifinal matches No. 2 seed Roswell against No. 3 seed Piedra Vista. That game is set for 9:45 a.m.
Kirtland Central dropped Miyamura 60-50 Tuesday to advance. Miyamura is the only team to have pulled off an upset in the 4A bracket so far, when it bounced fifth-seeded Española Valley Friday night.
Roswell survived a scare from seventh-seeded Valencia, picking up a 51-50 win to advance. Piedra Vista topped defending 4A champ Gallup 49-42.
The 4A title game is scheduled for Friday at The Pit.

Boys Class 4A: Coyotes stunned by seventh-seeded Desert Warriors

The only remaining District 2 team in either the boys or girls basketball tournaments, the Capital Jaguars, will take on Atrisco Heritage tonight.
Capital, the District 2 champ, and Atrisco will play at 6:30 p.m. at The Pit for the right to advance to Thursday’s semifinal round.
The third-seeded Jaguars survived a tough contest in the opening round, defeating Deming 47-43.
This morning, the first major upset of the quarterfinal round was pulled off by Santa Teresa. The seventh-seeded Desert Warriors stunned the second-seeded Roswell Coyotes, one of the favorites to win the 4A tournament, by a decisive score of 65-48.
The Desert Warriors, who some thought were underrated when it was announced they fell to the No. 7 slot, will play the Capital-Atrisco Heritage winner Thursday night for the right to advance to the 4A title game.
This afternoon, top-seeded Goddard met ninth-seeded Kirtland Central and fifth-seeded Gallup met fourth-seeded St. Pius X. Results of those games weren’t available as of press time.
