The top seeds in both the boys and girls Class AAAA state championship basketball tournaments went on to win this weekend at The Pit.
Kirtland Central, the girls top seed in Class AAAA, downed Shiprock, the No. 2 seed, for the fourth time this season, winning Friday night’s title game 71-52.
The state title was the Broncos’ 18th since 1980. The Broncos are the winningest school in New Mexico playoff history and their first state title since 2005.
Roswell, meanwhile, held on in the final seconds of the game to down Española Valley 63-60.
The Coyotes successfully defended the state title they won a year ago, while Española Valley’s Sundevils, the No. 2 seed in the state, lost in their first state championship game since 1991.
