Out of seven teams from District 2 that made it into the boys and girls state basketball playoffs, only one was left standing following this weekend.
The Class 4A state girls basketball tournament resumed this morning at The Pit in Albuquerque, while boys basketball tournament continues Wednesday with the quarterfinal round, also at The Pit.
District 2 went 1-6 in the first round of the 4A playoffs, with no girls teams and only one of three boys teams surviving its opener. Los Alamos, which qualified both its teams as 16th-seeded entries, was bounced in the openers. The Hilltopper girls lost to top-seeded Grants 62-44, while the Hilltopper boys gave the top-seeded Goddard Rockets a scare, going up by nine points midway through the third quarter, before the Rockets rallied to win 54-48.
Bernalillo's boys, the No. 8 seed, were the victims of a mild upset, falling to ninth-seeded Kirtland Central 60-51 in the opener.
Capital, the No. 3 seed, barely escaped an upset bid by 14th-seeded Deming, winning 47-43 in Santa Fe. Capital will take on 11th-seeded Atrisco Heritage, which stunned sixth-seeded Grants 51-50 Saturday night to advance.
Other boys matchups include Goddard vs. Kirtland Central, fourth-seeded St. Pius X vs. fifth-seeded Gallup and No. 7 Santa Teresa taking on No. 2 Roswell.
