Both the Class 4A boys and girls basketball polls have new teams heading them this week.
The New Mexico High School Coaches Association released its weekly coaches poll Wednesday and both former No. 1 teams were displaced. In the Class 4A girls poll, Roswell earned 139 points to take over the top spot from Kirtland Central, which garnered 135 points.
On the boys side, Gallup is the new No. 1 in the state, picking up nine of the possible 16 first-place votes this week to knock Española Valley from the top spot. Española Valley finished second in this week’s poll with 132 points to Gallup’s 140.
Both Kirtland Central and Española Valley had been the top teams in the rankings since the preseason rankings came out in November.
Los Alamos’ girls, which topped St. Pius X and Belen in recent days, earned three votes in this week’s top 10. See Friday’s Monitor for complete poll results.
