Both the Los Alamos Hilltopper basketball teams will have a big week ahead of them.

That week for the Hilltopper girls basketball team starts tonight.

The Hilltoppers will be making one final push for a district regular season title with games against Española Valley and Capital on the schedule this week.

Los Alamos’ girls will have a chance to even the District 2AAAA race and force a potential playoff game for a regular season title and the privilege of hosting the district tournament title game next week. It hosts the district-leading Española Valley Sundevils tonight. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Meanwhile, the Hilltopper boys will travel to Española Valley to take on the Sundevils Wednesday night.

The Sundevils (22-2 overall, 6-0 in 2AAAA) have all but sewn up the boys district race, but Los Alamos is hoping for a shot at a runner-up spot, which is currently occupied by Capital. A win Wednesday would tie Los Alamos and Capital in the 2AAAA standings with the two to square off head-to-head Saturday.

The Hilltopper boys will actually be catching the Sundevils coming off a loss, however. The Sundevils dropped a nondistrict game to Hope Christian — quite possibly the best team in the state, regardless of classification — Saturday night at Española Valley.

Los Alamos lost its first meeting to Española Valley Jan. 29 in front of a near-capacity crowd at Griffith Gymnasium, 65-52.

Capital (12-10 overall, 5-2 in 2AAAA) crushed Bernalillo 73-40 Monday night and holds a half-game lead over Los Alamos (16-7 overall, 4-2 in 2AAAA) by virtue of its win over Los Alamos Feb. 8 in Santa Fe.

For the Los Alamos girls (15-8 overall, 5-1 in 2AAAA), they suffered their only loss of the district season to the Sundevils (21-3 overall, 6-0 in 2AAAA) 42-32 Jan. 30 in the valley.

Los Alamos won big over the hapless Bernalillo Spartans Saturday at home, grabbing a 62-44 victory, its third straight win since the loss to Española Valley.

Following tonight’s game, Los Alamos has a nondistrict game Wednesday against Albuquerque Academy before closing out its regular season at home against Capital’s Jaguars.
