Both the Los Alamos Hilltopper boys and girls basketball teams went 0-3 in the Joe Armijo Invitational tournament this weekend, placing them eighth in the eight-team brackets.
Following opening round losses Thursday, neither team could bounce back to pick up a victory in the very tough tournament, which is hosted annually by Albuquerque Academy. The tournament is so tough, in fact, that the No. 1 Class AAAA team in the state, Española Valley, was Los Alamos’ opponent in the seventh-place game Saturday after losing to both Denver Mullen and Hope Christian.
Los Alamos’ boys lost in the consolation round of the tournament to Rio Rancho, 54-47 Friday afternoon, then dropped their tournament finale to Española Valley’s Sundevils 80-65.
The Hilltoppers (1-7) and the Sundevils are longtime District 2AAAA rivals, but the victory by the Sundevils won’t count in the 2AAAA standings. District play doesn’t open up until third week in January.
On the girls side, Los Alamos (1-5) was nipped by Albuquerque 42-41 in the consolation round and was knocked off 51-40 by El Paso, Texas, Del Valle 51-40.
