Only one of three District 2AAAA teams remained alive in the Class 4A state girls basketball tournament bracket heading into today’s quarterfinal round.
Española Valley’s Sundevils, the No. 4 seed in the tournament, were scheduled to take on the Grants Pirates at 4:45 at The Pit in Albuquerque.
The Sundevils, the regular season and tournament champions in 2AAAA this season, have a chance to get a measure of revenge for their arch-rivals, the Los Alamos Hilltoppers, when they face the Grants Pirates. The Pirates, the No. 5 seed in the girls bracket, shoved the Hilltoppers out of the playoffs with a 46-28 victory Friday night in Grants.
Los Alamos, the 12 seed in the tournament, got solid efforts from its roster, particularly senior Tina Radosevich, but had no answer for Grants’ slashing guards and the 6-foot-1 inside presence of Grants center Teige Zeller.
The top-seeded Kirtland Central Broncos, the defending 4A champs, outscored the other 2AAAA entry, Santa Fe, by a clip of nearly 3-1 to advance to the quarterfinals.
The highest seed to get knocked off in the first round Friday was sixth-seeded Del Norte, which was topped by 11th-seeded Piedra Vista 41-36.
The 4A boys tournament, also being played at The Pit, will continue Wednesday.
