Only one of three District 2AAAA teams remained alive in the Class 4A state girls basketball tournament bracket heading into today’s quarterfinal round.
Española Valley’s Sundevils, the No. 4 seed in the tournament, were scheduled to take on the Grants Pirates at 4:45 at The Pit in Albuquerque.
The Sundevils, the regular season and tournament champions in 2AAAA this season, have a chance to get a measure of revenge for their arch-rivals, the Los Alamos Hilltoppers, when they face the Grants Pirates. The Pirates, the No. 5 seed in the girls bracket, shoved the Hilltoppers out of the playoffs with a 46-28 victory Friday night in Grants.
Los Alamos, the 12 seed in the tournament, got solid efforts from its roster, particularly senior Tina Radosevich, but had no answer for Grants’ slashing guards and the 6-foot-1 inside presence of Grants center Teige Zeller.
The top-seeded Kirtland Central Broncos, the defending 4A champs, outscored the other 2AAAA entry, Santa Fe, by a clip of nearly 3-1 to advance to the quarterfinals.
The highest seed to get knocked off in the first round Friday was sixth-seeded Del Norte, which was topped by 11th-seeded Piedra Vista 41-36.
The 4A boys tournament, also being played at The Pit, will continue Wednesday.
This weekend, the No. 1 seed in the 4A bracket, Gallup, got quite a scare from 16th-seeded Kirtland Central. The two teams went into overtime with Gallup’s Bengals prevailing 64-61.
The Bengals’ quarterfinal opponent, Goddard the eighth seed, went into double-overtime against ninth-seeded Grants. Goddard held on in that game, played in Roswell, 64-63.
There were few blowouts in the first round of state on the boys’ side Saturday, although there were no upsets, either. Sixth-seeded St. Pius X slipped past 11th-seeded Valencia 51-47 and District 2AAAA team Capital got through its opening postseason game, knocking off 10th-seeded Albuquerque Academy 55-46.
Capital will meet another district representative, Española Valley, Wednesday evening. Española Valley won both regular season meetings between the two teams, earning a 2AAAA regular season title, but Capital upset Española Valley in the 2AAAA tournament championship game Feb. 26 in the valley.
The boys 4A tournament concludes with the championship game Saturday, while the girls tournament crowns a champion Friday. Check lamonitor.com for updates on scores this week.
