The Los Alamos Hilltopper baseball and softball teams both garnered votes in the first Class 4A coaches’ polls of the season.
The coaches’ polls are conducted by the New Mexico High School Coaches Association. Members from all across the state cast ballots for the top 10 teams in the state.
Los Alamos’ baseball team finished with two votes in the first poll, which was released late last week. That vote put Los Alamos unofficially 14th in the state.
In the 4A softball poll, Los Alamos earned six votes, which also placed it an unofficial 14th in the poll.
Not surprisingly, the Piedra Vista Panthers finished as the No. 1 team in Class 4A in both polls. The Panthers are the reigning state champs in both sports and both are considered to be among the title favorites again in 2011.
Piedra Vista’s baseball team got five of seven first-place votes last week while its softball team earned seven of eight votes for the top spot.
Piedra Vista swept Los Alamos in a baseball doubleheader to open the 2011 season.
In baseball, Bernalillo was the only other District 2AAAA member to earn votes. It had four total points. Other 2AAAA teams that earned votes in the softball poll included Española Valley (6) and Santa Fe (1).
