The Los Alamos Hilltopper baseball and softball players were shut out from the 2011 All-State Class 4A teams, but Los Alamos manager Mike Gill was named as the coach of the North All-Stars.
The All-State 4A softball team was announced Tuesday by the New Mexico High School Coaches Association, which also releases the All-Star baseball and softball teams.
Gill, the veteran manager of the Hilltopper baseball team who has led the squad to three consecutive district titles, will lead the 4A/5A All-Stars in their series against the South big-school All-Stars. He will go up against another veteran skipper, Miguel Gomez of Mayfield.
In Class 4A softball, Piedra Vista was far and away the most decorated team. Piedra Vista, which dominated the state tournament two weeks ago and might very well be the best softball program in the state, regardless of classification, earned seven of the nine All-State first team selections. Pitcher Karysta Donisthorpe, the most dominant hurler in Class 4A, led the first team selections.
Farmington, the state playoff runner-up, had one first team selection and four second team selections.
Both Donisthorpe and Rachel Ward, another very good pitcher on the Piedra Vista squad, were also named to the 4A/5A All-Star team.
In all, five Panthers earned their way on the All-Star roster.
All-Star teams are comprised of the top graduating seniors from around the state. Los Alamos’ softball team had just one senior on its roster in 2011, Tina Radosevich.
The 4A/5A softball series will take place June 10-11 in Farmington. The 4A/5A baseball series will be played June 10-11 in Las Cruces.
Only three of the North’s 20-man roster were players from Class 4A.
In Class 3A softball, Pojoaque shortstop Kiana Vigil was named to the All-State second team.
