White Rock Little League’s 11-12 All-Stars can close out the District 1 tournament and clinch a trip to state tonight with a win over Española Valley.
Despite a pair of rain delays during Tuesday’s game at Alto Park in Santa Fe, White Rock pitcher Jared Mang held Española Valley scoreless through four strong innings, allowing just two hits and two walks while fanning 10 batters.
White Rock led the game the entire way and won 7-2, putting it in tonight’s championship game. Española Valley beat Los Alamos in the tournament semifinals and will face White Rock again for the District 1 title.
Franklin Archuleta threw the final two innings, surrendering two runs on two hits. He and the White Rock defense got out of a jam by turning a fifth inning double play, going from third baseman Nick Capelli to first baseman Clint Adams to catcher Tyler Thorn.
Jake Downs led White Rock’s offensive effort with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate, knocking in two runs.
Mang was 2-for-4 with a RBI Tuesday, and Thorn had a base hit which brought in another run.
White Rock will have two chances to clinch the tournament title. Should it lose tonight — the game is scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m. — it can still win the tournament with a victory in a 6 p.m. Friday game.
