SANTA FE — The Los Alamos Hilltopper baseball team drilled the Santa Fe Demon pitching staff on the way to sweeping a big District 2-4A doubleheader Saturday.
Los Alamos, keyed by a big inning in each game, rolled to 16-2 and 16-0 victories over Santa Fe. Los Alamos pushed seven runs across in the third inning of game one, then for good measure put up nine runs in the top of the first inning in the nightcap.
Both games lasted the minimum five innings.
“It was a complete offensive effort,” Los Alamos manager Mike Gill said. “You hope that was stuff that we’d been working on in practice for the past week and a half.”
Austin Aslin of Los Alamos had a monster day at the plate, finishing the doubleheader with six extra-base hits, four doubles and two triples. Meanwhile, Jared Mang, who had the game-winning home run in Los Alamos’ district victory at Bernalillo Wednesday, hit a grand slam in the third inning of game one to break that contest wide open.
Mang also earned the pitching victory in game one, while JD Weiss picked up his second 2-4A victory of the season in game two. Both Billy Cooper and Thomas Russell were effective in relief roles Saturday.
Gill also said catcher Zeke Zumbro had a good defensive game, not allowing a passed ball in all 10 innings of work.
