Baseball: Effort to get team in Clovis whiffs

By Associated Press

CLOVIS, N.M. (AP) — An effort to put professional baseball in Clovis has struck out.

The Clovis News Journal reports the independent Pecos League pulled its association with the Clovis Pioneers on Monday, replacing them with the Ruidoso Osos.

League Commissioner Andrew Dunn says he doesn't see how organizers can make it work financially in Clovis.

He blames an inability to sell alcohol at Bell Park, which is owned by Clovis Municipal Schools, a high lease charge at the park and the inability to schedule games at city-owned fields because youth leagues are receiving priority.

The Ruidoso team will start a 68-game schedule in Clovis' position on May 10, hosting the Roswell Invaders.
