The Los Alamos Hilltopper baseball team was knocked out of the state Class 4A tournament in the opening round this weekend.
Los Alamos, the No. 12 seed, traveled to face the fifth-seeded Artesia Bulldogs Friday and Saturday. Artesia came away with 12-2, 12-2 victories to sweep the best-of-three series.
The Hilltoppers, who won the 2011 District 2-4A title, finish the season with a record of 13-13.
The Bulldogs will advance to play the fourth-seeded St. Pius X Sartans in the second round of state playoffs.
Only one of the tournament's best-of-three opening series went to three games. Atrisco Heritage, the No. 10 seed, pulled off a minor upset over Belen, coming back after losing the opening game to win Saturday's games 10-2 and 16-14. Belen won the opener 21-10.
Other winners included top-seeded Albuquerque Academy, second-seeded Piedra Vista, third-seeded Farmington, sixth-seeded Goddard and ninth-seeded Los Lunas. Los Lunas pulled off the only other first-round upset, topping eighth-seeded Santa Teresa 7-5 and 9-6.
