A road trip awaits students at Barranca Elementary School; all they need to do is pack their bags full of books. To take this literary journey, a Scholastic book fair will be held Thursday through March 26 at the school library.The book fair will be held from 3-7 p.m. Thursday, 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Friday, 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Monday, 8 a.m.-7 p.m. March 25 and 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m. March 26.Proceeds from the event will go towards purchasing new books, especially math and science reading material, for the library and getting bookcases that are more appropriate for pre-school through second grade students.“We are doing the book fair basically to raise money for the school, but specifically for the library so we can get the library updated,” PTO vice president Stephanie Hailey said.The library could lose a few years. Librarian Alice Newman said the average book dates from 1989-1992.In addition to raising money for the library, students are spreading their support outside of the school. There is a donation drive underway to raise money for the San Ildefonso Day School. Shannon Salaman, book fair chairperson, explained a teacher at Barranca Elementary School retired from the public school and now teaches at the day school.The former Barranca Elementary School teacher has talked about the need for supplies at the day school.
