This Friday we’ll be at the Best Western Hilltop House with the Austin, Texas band Del Castillo.
This fabulous band plays a fusion of Flamenco, nuevo Flamenco, rock, cumbias & Latin salsa, blues, reggae and world music.
Del Castillo appeared in the Robert Rodriguez films, “Spy Kids 3D,” “El Mariachi,” “Desperado,” “Once Upon A Time In Mexico,” “Sin City” and “Grindhouse.”
Do you remember Antonio Banderas walking down the road carrying his guitar case in “Desperado?” He walks in Cheech Marin’s bar and blows the place up? When Antonio isn’t taking out guns, that’s Del Castillo blowing it up on guitarras! Did you see “Kill Bill 2?” Director Quentin Tarantino reworked the film’s ending so he could fit Del Castillo in.
These cats are gonna strut up to our stage Friday and blow us away. Spanish music is what’s happening these days in rock, blues and folk clubs all across America. Even if the show isn’t Latino, that’s the music they’re playing at the breaks.
Del Castillo has toured with Willie Nelson, Los Lobos, Ozomatli, Don Henley, Los Lonely Boys, Buddy Guy and the Neville Brothers. They play most of the major festivals including the California WorldFest, a number of Willie Nelson’s 4th of July Picnics, Eric Clapton’s Crossroads Guitar Festival, Austin City Limits and the Strawberry Music Fest.
Rolling Stone said of the band, “Tumbling brilliance on nylon-string classical guitars with eruptions of technique and taste that conjures images of Eddie Van Halen fronting early Santana with an assist from the Gipsy Kings.”
The show for July 30 will be at Ashley Pond with the Western swing/Gypsy jazz band, the Hot Club of Cowtown. They get their name from being a fusion of the style of the great western swing artist Bob Wills and the Gypsy jazz artist Django Reinhardt.
Listen to and read about the Hot Club at www.hotclubofcowtown.com. I’ll let you know about the Hot Club next week.
