Local golfer Ted Ball will be one of those competing for the New Mexico-West Texas amateur title this year.
The 2013 New Mexico-West Texas Amateur Championship, put on by the Sun Country Amateur Golf Association, will tee off Friday. The tournament will be played at Isleta Eagle Golf Club just south of Albuquerque and will run through Sunday.
In all, 68 players will vie for the title this year. Ball is the only Los Alamos entrant in the event.
The Sun Country association includes players throughout New Mexico and El Paso, Texas, although a few residents of southern Colorado and even one player from Arizona are also taking part.
The tournament champion will receive an invitation to play in the Pacific Coast Amateur Championship and the Southwestern Amateur Championship, among other events.
Ball is one of the top local men’s golfers, having been half of the winning Memorial Day Tournament team in both 2010 and 2011. He also had the first day lead over Curt Norman in the 2011 City Championship before Norman stormed back in day two to win the tournament going away.
Northern New Mexico isn’t particularly well-represented in this year’s Sun Country tournament field. Only six players, including Ball, are from Santa Fe or points north.
