Former Los Alamos track and field athlete Simon Bailey and current Hilltopper Greg Ahlers both finished in the top 10 at last weekend’s Great Southwest Invitational meet.
Bailey, who graduated from Los Alamos High School last month, finished with 5,588 points, which was good enough for seventh place overall. Ahlers, a senior-to-be, had 5,245 points, which put him in the No. 10 spot overall among 17 competing athletes at last weekend’s decathlon.
The decathlon — which is not a regular event at the prep level — consists of 10 events, including sprints, field events and the 1,500 meters.
In the 1,500 meters Ahlers and Bailey made their marks on the meet, finishing first and second. Neither Ahlers nor Bailey are distance runners, but Ahlers finished with a time of 4:38.35 in the 1,500 and Bailey finished just a little over a second behind him.
The Great Southwest meet is an annual event which has been hosted in recent years at the University of New Mexico Track and Field Complex in Albuquerque. Some of the top athletes around the southwest, and some well outside of it, are invited to take part.
The decathlon was won by Zack Bornstein of Westlake Village, Calif., who scored 6,392 points, just three points better than Wyatt French of Rockwall, Texas.
