Bad cheer at basketball game

Dear Editor,

I am from the Espaola Valley and I have worked in Los Alamos for the past seven years, first at Little Forest Playschool and currently at Mesa Public Library. I was delighted to find that I was so well received by the people of Los Alamos. By far, the majority of my interactions with people from the area have been very positive. However, something recently happened that greatly disturbed me.The Espaola Middle School boys and girls basketball teams traveled to Los Alamos Feb. 7 to play against the Los Alamos Middle School (LAMS) teams. My niece, who is a cheerleader at Espaola Middle School, accompanied them along with other members of the cheerleading squad. While the Los Alamos basketball teams and most of the members of the audience were courteous and well mannered, the LAMS cheerleaders, along with some of the fans, were not. They jeered and shouted disparaging remarks, even going so far as to yell, “You suck!” at the Espaola cheerleaders as they performed on the court.Needless to say, I was shocked and saddened to hear of this petty, mean-spirited behavior, and even more so to learn that not one adult from the Los Alamos area appeared to step in to stop it. Sadly, Los Alamos is not the only place where this type of disgusting behavior is exhibited.I believe it is up to us, as adults, regardless of where we are or who is doing it, to speak out against this and thereby put a stop to it. Otherwise, we will be guilty of sending a message to our young people that poor sportsmanship, disrespect and hatred are very much acceptable – ideals to be encouraged and perpetuated.Felice H.
