This was the year of the Tigers.
After finishing second four times since 2003, the Aztec Tigers picked up the Class 4A football title Saturday. The Tigers squeaked past the Goddard Rockets 28-27.
The win was the first ever state football title for Aztec, which has been an elite state program for most of the past decade. Aztec lost a shootout to Artesia in the 4A title game a year ago, 45-34.
Also Saturday, the Lovington Wildcats came back from a 10-0 deficit against the St. Michael’s Horsemen to win 14-10 in the Class 3A state title game. That game was played at Ivan Head Stadium in Santa Fe.
In Class 5A, the Cleveland Storm stomped one of the most storied programs in state prep history, the Mayfield Trojans. The Storm cruised to a 51-28 victory over the Trojans, clinching the first football championship in Cleveland’s short history.
