ALBUQUERQUE, NM – Elementary Level winner goes to Ms. Tammy Moore’s third grade class at Aspen Elementary in Los Alamos who collected 1.77 lbs per student.  They will receive a visit and magic show performance from Ronald McDonald later this month.  The Middle School Level winners are 7th and 8th grade students of Penasco Middle School’s Future Educators Association who collected 5.44 lbs. per student.  They will be recognized on an award plaque displayed at the Ronald McDonald House.  All participating schools will receive a certificate of appreciation.

New Mexico school students in grades K-8 collected pop tabs from September 20, 2010 through April 30, 2011 as part of the 2010-2011 School Pop Collection Contest.  Winning schools were determined by amount of tabs collected by pounds per student.  Pop tabs collected from beverages, pet food cans and soup cans totaled to 3,197 lbs, more than tripling last year’s amount of tabs collected.

New Mexico school participation was also at an all time high with 63 schools participating, a 162% increase from the 2009-2010 school year.  The donated pop tabs raised $2097, which will help offset Ronald McDonald House expenses such as laundry detergent, toilet paper and other consumables the families need on a daily basis. “It is great to see kids helping kids and becoming young philanthropists”, said Sandy Mann, CEO and Executive Director of Ronald McDonald House Charities of New Mexico.

Ronald McDonald House Charities of New Mexico’s (RMHC-NM) Pop Tab Program allows a simple way for children, individuals, community groups and companies to contribute.  Tabs are smaller and cleaner than cans, taking up less precious storage space.  While one tab seems insignificant, having all the state donating tabs is quite significant.  Those wishing to donate Pop tabs can bring them to the Ronald McDonald House on 1011 Yale Blvd. NE throughout the year.  The 2011-2012 School Pop Tab Collection Contest will kick off in September in partner with Rudy’s Downtown Recycling in Albuquerque.

Ronald McDonald House Charities of New Mexico provides comfort and care and home-away-from-home for families with ill children seeking treatment at an Albuquerque medical facility.  RMHC-NM is supported by generous donors, volunteers and the community.  For more information on the Pop Tab Program, special events or volunteering, please contact the House at 505-842-8960 or visit www.rmhc-nm.org.
