The third grade GATE program at Aspen Elementary School collected 2,300 books for the Checkerboard Area Health System waiting rooms.

Used children’s books in good condition were needed to make the waiting rooms more patient friendly, and the Checkerboard Area Health System worked to comply with the CAHS Community Guidance Council’s request for books.

Several other donors contributed to the book drive. Jemez Valley Medical Clinic and the Cuba Health Center received multiple donations of children’s books.

On May 7, Teresa Woodfill, CAHS administrator; Beth Beyers, CAHS business office supervisor; and Silvester Hurtado, CAHS maintenance specialist went to the Aspen School to say thank you, and to pick up the books. The students, who were informed about the book drive by their teacher Katy Watson, said that they wanted to collect the books because they “wanted to do something for their community.”

The students organized the book drive and collected books from students and staff at Aspen Elementary School for three weeks.

The Aspen Elementary School library gave a few books to the cause because the staff was planning to “weed out” duplicates.

The students received hearts and stars from CAHS staff because of their dedicated efforts.
