Ask Fr. John: Understanding Pascha, part two

-A A +A

Why is Eastern Orthodox Christian “Easter” THIS Sunday? - JBA

Actually, Orthodox Easter was last Sunday. In the last article, we mentioned how the feast of Pascha lasts the entire week following Easter Sunday. To be more precise, it is as if the midnight service continues without breaking until the next Sunday.
We call this week after Pascha “Bright Week” because all is filled with the light of the Resurrection. Following Bright Week a shift occurs and we remain in the feast for another 33 days. That is until the Feast of the Ascension.
Bright Week could be called the “heavenly celebration” of Pascha. When we come to the next Sunday, we become like the Apostles gathered in the upper room, “the doors being shut,” John 20:26. After the following Sunday we celebrate the Resurrection like the Apostles did, on earth, proclaiming the Resurrection to the world.
As we continue in the glorious feast of the Resurrection, we rejoice and celebrate the destruction of death, the destruction of Hell, and Christ’s victory!
As we say in the Orthodox Church, “Christ is Risen from the dead trampling down death by death, and upon those in the tombs bestowing life!”
