Katherine Ashcraft was born March 8, 1919, in Ozark, AR, to the home of Maud and Everett Benson. She passed from this life August 23, 2008, at Roosevelt General Hospital in Portales, NM, at the age of 89.
Katherine grew up in Arkansas for the early years of her life. She moved to San Diego, CA, for a period during World War II, where she worked in an aircraft manufacturing plant. After the war she returned to Ozark, where she married James F. Ashcraft on October 17, 1950.
At that time she moved to Los Alamos, where James was a member of the Los Alamos Fire Department. In Los Alamos in September 1951 they welcomed the birth of their son, John. They lived in Los Alamos until March 1971, when James retired as Assistant Chief of the LAFD. At that time they moved to Portales, where James became Safety Officer for ENMU, and where their son John subsequently began his medical practice. In Portales, she enjoyed gardening and homemaking.
She was preceded in death by her husband, James on April 13, 2007. Survivors include her son, John Ashcraft of Portales.
Services will be held in Ozark, AR, at a later date. Condolences and memories of Katherine may be sent to the family c/o John Ashcraft at 413 Monticello Parkway, Portales, NM 88130.
