The Arriba Sol volleyball team was the big winner at the Mile High AAU Super Regional Tournament last month.
Arriba Sol, which consists of players from Los Alamos and Española, knocked off the tournament’s No. 1 seed in the championship match to earn the victory.
The super regional was a qualifier for the AAU national championship tournament, which is scheduled for later this month.
Arriba Sol, which won another qualifier earlier during the club season, will play in the club division starting June 23 in Orlando, Fla.
Arriba Sol went undefeated in the tournament. It had a 10-2 set record in pool play and was awarded the No. 2 seed in the elimination round.
In the opening round of direct elimination, Arriba Sol defeated Faith Volleyball Club (Denver), 21-15, 21-16. Christina Naranjo had a big match from the right side to lead the team to the win.
In the semifinals, Arriba Sol took on Riverton, Wyo., which was anchored by a 6-foot-2 middle blocker, whom the Arriba Sol coaches said had been a dominant player in the tournament up to that point.
Arriba Sol, led by setter Celina Naranjo, played up-tempo against Riverton, which helped neutralize the Riverton middle attack. Arriba Sol swept the match 21-11, 21-18.
Arriba Sol advanced to the finals where it faced 303 Volleyball Club from Denver, the top seed in the tournament which had dropped just one set heading into the championship.
Kayla Romero had a big first set hitting from the outside while Elana Salazar served 15 straight points as Arriba Sol took set one 21-6. 303 came back to take the second set 25-23, coming back from a 14-8 deficit.
In the third set, Arriba Sol’s Arielle Martinez’s dig from the right side sparked her team midway through and the Arriba Sol prevailed 17-15 to earn the tournament title.
