Arms Control Committee to host weapons talk

Nuclear weapons expert Joseph C. Martz will present an overview titled “Nuclear Weapons, Past, Present, and Future” at an open meeting of the Los Alamos Committee on Arms Control and International Security at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday in Graves Hall at the United Church, 2525 Canyon Road.
The talk will review U.S. nuclear weapons development and its close linkage to deterrence during the Cold War.
Technical advances influenced nuclear policy in often unexpected and unplanned ways. The evolution of the nuclear deterrent to the nuclear triad and the challenges of the post-Cold war will be discussed.
Looking forward, the shift in policy to a goal of the elimination of nuclear weapons presents new challenges, both technical and political.
Means to enable stockpile reductions within the framework of deterrence will also be reviewed and discussed.
Martz, a 25-year veteran of LANL’s weapons programs, is currently a senior staff advisor to the LANL principal associate director for Weapon Programs. In the fall of 2009, Martz was appointed the inaugural William J. Perry Fellow in International Security at Stanford University’s Center for International Security and Cooperation (CISAC) where former LANL Director Sig Hecker is co-director.
