Are your child's shots up to date?

-A A +A
By The Staff

The first day of school is no time to find out there’s a few immunizations missing on your paperwork. Unfortunately, many parents don’t realize something is lacking until the first day of school.

Those missing immunizations are often detected upon entry to kindergarten or as students transfer in from other districts. Middle school parents might also need to be aware that there are additional immunization requirements for entry into the seventh grade.

Local Nurse Megan Pfeffer will staff an immunization clinic for those back-to-school needs prior to the start of the school year. The event is designed to help any student in need of booster or any other immunizations.

To combat a run on the Children’s Clinic, the Los Alamos Public Health Office will host the "Back to School" Immunization Day Thursday, Aug. 14. The immunization clinic will run from 8 a.m.-noon, with a break for lunch and then resume from 1-5 p.m.

“Tetanus, Diphtheria and Pertussis (Tdap) vaccine is required for seventh graders on up, if five or more years have passed since their first tetanus-containing vaccine,” Pfeffer said. “Two doses of Measles Mumps and Rubella (MMR) are required for all grades (K-12). A second dose of Varicella vaccine (chicken pox) is now required for Kindergarten entry.”
