First Friday Forts. Come to PEEC and get building! Join other kids and parents who like fort building to construct, play, and hang out. Also, check out the mud pie kitchen! 3:30–5 p.m. Free.

Underground of Enchantment Exhibit Opening. The 3D photo exhibit and movie features one of the most beautiful caves in the world- Lechuguilla Cave in Carlsbad Caverns NP. Opening reception at Mesa Public Library 4-5:30 p.m. and at PEEC 5-6:30 p.m. Contact PEEC or MPL for more information.

Mapping Lechuguilla Cave. Local caver John Lyles will present highlights of his involvement in the Lechuguilla Cave mapping project. Hear about the history of discovery in one of the most beautiful caves in the world. 6:30 p.m. Free, no registration required.
Burnt Mesa Pueblo Hike. Join PEEC on a historical hike of Burnt Mesa Pueblo. Dorothy Hoard will lead hikers to see ancient village sites and spectacular viewpoints. Free. Meet at PEEC at 9:30 a.m. or 10 a.m. at Burnt Mesa trailhead.
Nature Play Area Clean-Up. Help PEEC spruce up their gardens and nature play areas in time for spring planting, fort building, and more. They need help moving rocks, installing benches, and removing garbage to prepare the area for safe, unstructured play. 1-4 p.m.
April 13
Old La Bajada Road Hike. Janie O’Rourke will lead a hike following a historic roadway up and down the escarpment at La Bajada. The travel route dates back to the Spanish settlement in NM & Camino Real. Free, but please register in advance. Meet at PEEC at 8:30 a.m. to carpool.
April 14
Caving Outing. PEEC is offering an exciting outing to Alabaster Cave near San Isidro. Tony Hinojosa will lead a group through the wild cave, stopping for lunch in the cool darkness. $30/$24 PEEC members. Meet at PEEC at 8 a.m. to carpool to the entrance. Register in advance and go to web site for equipment requirements.Annual Earth Day Festival. PEEC’s biggest event of the year! Come out for booths & displays where community groups show their earth-friendly products & practices, & provide info about our environment on the Pajarito Plateau. Good food, hands-on activities & entertainment for all. 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. Free.

“Dirt! The Movie” at Reel Deal. PEEC & Reel Deal Theater presents a FREE Earth Day film that takes you inside the wonders of soil. Dirt! brings to life the environmental, economic, social, and political impact that soil has. 6 p.m.

Expedition Caving Basics Talk. Learn what it’s like to spend a week living and working underground. Local caver Beth Cortright will provide details, pictures, and video of a typical caving expedition. 6 p.m. at Mesa Public Library. Free. Contact PEEC or MPL for more information.
